"Right-to-work" laws and the Supreme Court's Janus decision don't have to mean game-over for unions.
In July, Labor Notes published an expanded special issue highlighting examples of how workers are building powerful unions despite a mandatory open shop—in schools, factories, buses, hospitals, oil refineries, grocery stores, post offices, and shipyards across the U.S. »
Despite heavy pressure from their employer and their own union leaders, rank-and-file Teamsters across the U.S. last week voted down the controversial tentative agreement at UPS, 54 percent no to 46 percent yes.
Even UPS indicated it was ready to return to the table.
But then Teamsters Package Division Director Denis Taylor announced he would exploit a constitutional loophole to declare this contract ratified.
Teamster activists are calling on the union and the company to respect the majority vote and reopen negotiations. »

Union members and activists in Japan are organizing Troublemakers Schools in Tokyo (November 11-12) and Osaka/Kyoto (November 18-19). Using Labor Notes' Secrets of a Successful Organizer book, participants will learn how to identify fellow leaders, build a winning leadership team, and plot a shop floor campaign.
